“We sit collectively in unique possession of an elegant solution to the world’s most vexing problem. And it may be so elegant that it’s optimal.”
In August 2017 CrossFit founder Greg Glassman spoke these words to a group of medical students at the LSU School of Medicine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IagxK7KQBlI). He was speaking about what he calls the 5 Buckets of Death: Chronic, Microbic, Kinetic, Genetic, and Toxic. He sights that Chronic is like a trashcan fire that if any of the other 4 land in it, it will make them worse and push you towards death at a much faster rate. Meaning that if you get sick (Microbic), get in an accident (Kinetic), battle something Genetic, or get poisoned (Toxic), your body will be more able to keep you alive if you do not have a Chronic disease.
What is Chronic disease? They are all things that are “lifestyle” related and largely reversible and even curable. Things like obesity, type-2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, low micro-nutrient (vitamin) levels, and even many auto-immune disorders.
It’s a hard truth to hear, and I even cringe to say it as I prepare for the backlash; if you have one of these, you CHOSE it. And you can CHOOSE to be done with it. It it true for all of them? Maybe not. But I would argue that it is the truth for MOST of them.
So, what is the “Elegant Solution”? It is the simple and effective process presented by CrossFit in a way that has never before been presented. How do I know? Because it’s my education, my background, my profession. Is CrossFit the ONLY one who currently presents this or something like this? Now, no. But 20, 15, 10…even 5 year ago, yes.

Get off your couch. Go for a walk. Do some air squats, some crunches, some push-ups. Something! Get up and move your body MORE than you are at rest.
Get off the carbs. The refined stuff. The sugars, the breads, the pastas. Pulverized carbs in large amounts are the BIGGEST contributor to Chronic disease. bucket. In fact, it’s more important than getting off the couch. Not by much, but if you have to start with one, clean up what you eat FIRST!
In March of 2020, when the virus that shall not be named hit the U.S., Coach Glassman gave a talk to the Harvard School of Medicine (check it out here, it’s a 7 min clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgnukiqovaA) where he specifically points out what the data now confirms; if you have chronic illness this thing is going to make you VERY sick or kill you.
