We’re on the last week of this journey of learning GOOD nutritional habits AND UNLEARNING all the garbage the media, social media, celebrities, and the internet have all taught you.

This week, the bottom line.  Calories in vs. calories out.  While we stand by the fact that weight loss and fat loss is far more complicated than this simple equation, if this part is missing it will be nearly impossible to win.

Calories are simply how we measure energy.  We get calories from proteins, carbs, and fats. WHich means that, when it comes to weight loss, it’s just math.  That’s what makes this simple.

For many, just balancing how much you’re eating vs. how much you’re moving is enough to move the needle and start shedding those extra cookies from the holiday season or the baby weight, or the beer gut.  It’s why it’s the foundation.  While food quality is a MAJOR factor in how your body uses those calories, it’s still possible to over eat high quality food.  Ever eat an entire jar of nuts or a whole rotisserie chicken on your own?  Yeah. Us either…we swear.

The reason total calories are the bottom line is because it’s arguably the place most of us are missing the boat AND it’s the simplest fix.  All it takes is to begin tracking your calories.  Apps like MyfitnessPal, Lose It!, and My Plate Calorie Tracker, are all quick, easy ways to start seeing just how many calories you’re eating in a day.  They can even help you gain an idea of how much is right for you (although, getting your recommended daily calories from a qualified trainer, coach, or nutritionist is more accurate).

Starting with KNOWING is always good.  Once you know, you can take control.  While we’re talking about it, the thing we find goes along with this is knowing how much water a day you drink.  Not coffee.  Not Tea.  Not Gatorade.  Water.  Plain ol’ H2O.  Set a goal to drink half your weight in ounces a day.  Meaning if you’re 150 lbs. you should drink about 75 ounces of water a day.  It will make a huge difference in how you feel throughout the day.

There it is folks.  The basics.  Now, go out, take control, and start feeling and looking better!
